Musicology (in Bulgarian)
Short presentation of the programme:
The programme is aimed at musicians and students interested in humanities, especially music, who may not have musical education but would like to expand their knowledge in musicology and work in interdisciplinary scientific and scientific-applied projects. It is in the professional area of humanities with no narrow specialisation.
During the three semesters, the students enrol in courses and get acquainted with music as a cultural and art system; a means of communication, relaxation and therapy; its market niche positioning, its relations with other arts; its historical and theoretical development. The course of study envisages online forms of consultation and instruction.
The courses in the first and second semester are more theoretically-oriented, some of them advanced. The third semester includes courses focused on music culture models in the 20th and 21st cc., as well as courses on the career pursuit of Musicology graduates. The students can choose to enrol in relevant courses taught in other specialties, complying with the programme scheme, for instance an instrument. In the training courses, such as Scientific Seminars, Musicology, Musical Arts and practices, students can gain experience in a real working environment, incl. scientific events, media cooperation, etc.

Practical training courses:
There are placement and internship contracts concluded with institutions in Bulgaria. Each semester students have the opportunity to participate in national and international projects, improving the knowledge and skills mastered during the course of study at NBU.
International mobility:
The programme provides an opportunity for international student mobility at universities in Austria, Great Britain, Greece, Spain, Italy, Poland, Finland, France, Croatia, Switzerland, Turkey, etc.
Graduate Student Competencies:
1. Graduates will have mastered knowledge and skills in scientific and scientific-practical fields in theoretical (systemic) and applied musicology and its links with other spheres of knowledge on culture and the arts: music and philosophy, music and terminology, music and lexicography, music and culture, music and information, music creation and performance, music and media, music and audiences, etc.
2. Graduates will have mastered knowledge on scientific literature (Bulgarian, English, etc.); musical culture and its relationship with other spheres of culture and creativity, as well as the relevant social context; processes and phenomena, theoretical views and relevant fields; designing and implementing research projects and applied tasks; proposing and justifying solutions to theoretical and practical problems, etc.
Graduation:
Completion of studies takes place by defending a master’s dissertation or passing a state exam upon earning the required number of credits. The graduation process complies with the NBU Standard for Educational and Qualification Degree Completion.
Occupation and possible positions:
Graduates pursue careers as musicologists in scientific settings, teachers of music theory, music history, ethnomusicology, etc. (for graduates in music education); musicologists in musical ensembles, editors in print and electronic media, consultants in cultural and public institutions, etc.
