The programme provides students with the opportunity to participate in educational and other scientific conferences, placements and internships at the department, as well as at external institutions such as ministries, state agencies, municipal administrations, law firms, translation offices serving the justice system, non-governmental organisations, foreign companies, etc.

International mobility:

To expand academic cooperation with a view to globalisation and in cooperation with the European Network of Master's Programmes in Translation, the programme in Legal Translation with One Foreign Language (English or German) provides Erasmus+ mobilities under bilateral contracts.

Graduate Student Competencies:

Graduates will have become specialists in the field of legal translation who:

• possess a wide range of theoretical and practical specialised knowledge in the field of the Bulgarian legal system, as well as the English- and/or German-language legal systems;

• understand ideas and concepts and regularities of European legislation;

• demonstrate a critical awareness of knowledge in the translation of legal texts and the connections between different legal systems;

• master a set of strategies and practical approaches in the implementation of written and oral legal translation;

• develop new and diverse skills related to modern knowledge and practices, using translation software, electronic resources, databases, term banks, various lexicographic directories and reference literature;

• exhibit creativity and innovation in their approach to dealing with unpredictable translation problems;

• are able to present their own concepts in a clear and accessible manner, formulate problems and discover possible solutions in the field of translation of legal texts;

• integrate knowledge and sources of information and apply them in an unfamiliar context;

• demonstrate abilities for adequate behaviour in a professional environment;

• collect, process and interpret case studies and possess skills for scientific research work, reflecting modern trends in the field of translation theory and practice with a view to their further development in the chosen scientific field in the doctoral programs of the NBU.

Graduation:

Completion of studies takes place by defending a master’s dissertation or passing a state exam upon earning the required number of credits. The graduation process complies with the NBU Standard for Educational and Qualification Degree Completion.

The programme also provides graduates with the opportunity to take the sworn court interpreter exam before a committee of the Ministry of Justice.

Occupation and possible positions:

Graduates pursue careers as translators in the Ministry of Justice, courts; collaborators, translators, and editors in diplomatic missions, law firms, state administration, public and private organisations; in print and electronic media; international organisations and foreign companies, banks and insurance companies, etc.
