Performing Arts and Society (in Bulgarian)

Short presentation of the programme:

The programme aims to present theatrical education using various media as a creative reflection of contemporary civil society. The modern theatrical process encourages artists aware of arts’ social contribution and skilled to implement projects in this sphere. The programme meets these requirements and provides an adequate continuing education to performers.

The two-semester course of study is implemented on a creative project basis, allowing students from the three specialisations to work in teams. In the autumn semester, the project is developed at a conceptual level, providing the necessary theoretical framework, introducing viewpoints and determining students’ participation and functions based on their specialisations. Having reviewed the current local funding programmes, a project is developed, meeting the requirements of the calls. In the spring semester, the creative project, i.e. a play, performance, short film, television play, mini-series, educational performance, radio play or any other stage or audio-visual form, is launched.

Each year, there is a mentor who manages the educational and project processes and teaches the core courses in the programme. The rest of the courses are optional, either autonomous or related to the core ones, aiming to upgrade and support the project activity. The students’ role in the educational process is an active one. The mentor manages the group dynamics of the cohort and supervises the creative process.

Directing and Management Module Graduation Supplement

Graduates in Directing and Management Module complete their course of studies by directing a performance. Upon a contest held by a board at the end of June, the best proposal for a performance by a theatre directing graduate is selected and included in the repertoire of the NBU Study Theatre.

The conditions for a diploma performance to be included in the repertoire of the NBU Study Theatre are the following:

• a project submission to the Central Fund for Strategic Development (CFSD) or the Study Programmes Fund at the School of Graduate Studies; filling out the forms uploaded on the website in compliance with the strategic goals of NBU and the programme; expenses cover props and do not include royalties; the forms are submitted to the graduate mentor with a copy to Assoc. Prof. Petrova and Assoc. Prof. Ivanova for approval, the department board.

• The funds for copyright purchase have to be included in the budget of CFSD project. The copyright has to be settled in advance with the director of the performance and NBU.

• The performance has to be approved by an internal board at an annual competition in June, as part of a summer semester, or after the graduate is ready to stage a performance.

• To prepare and stage a performance, the graduate through his mentor can submit a project to the Study Programmes Fund at the School of Graduate Studies for up to BGN 500 funding to cover costs for costumes and decor.

• After the performance takes part in the competition, the Department Board of the Theatre Art and Society Programme decides on the NBU fund and a total amount of funding to be applied for.
