Microbiology (in Bulgarian)
Short presentation of the programme:
The programme offers two specialisations: Food Microbiology and Human Microbiology. It prepares both theoretically and practically qualified microbiologists to be competitive in the job market in Bulgaria and abroad. The programme is one-year long, providing training in key microbiology disciplines in the first semester and highly specialised training in one of the two specialisations in the second. In the third semester students write their theses or take a state exam. The students decide on their specialisation upon completing the first semester. The programme is suitable for holders of a bachelor's degree in the field of biological sciences and holders of degrees in other professional areas interested in microbiology A preparatory semester is offered to holders of bachelor's degrees in areas different from biological sciences.

Major and professional qualification:
Module: Human Microbiology
Qualification: microbiologist
Module: Food Microbiology
Qualification: microbiologist
Practical training courses:
Practical training takes place in the Microbiological Laboratory at the NBU Study and Research Laboratory of Biology. During the training, sessions are also held in specialised analytical and diagnostic units, specialised laboratories and molecular biological laboratories. At the end of the course of study, there is an internship in structures related to food analysis or in microbiological diagnostic laboratories, depending on the module.
International mobility:
The programme provides an opportunity for international student mobility at universities in France, Poland and Romania.
Graduate Student Competencies:
Graduates in Microbiology master the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills in one of the modules: Food Microbiology or Human Microbiology.
Students’ practical training in laboratory conditions is solid; the skills acquired enable them to immediately start working in a microbiology laboratory and independently carry out laboratory work.
In the final semester, students carry out an obligatory internship in public or private laboratories.
The teaching faculty includes leading microbiologists from the country.
Graduation:
Completion of studies takes place by defending a master’s dissertation or passing a state exam upon earning the required number of credits.
The graduation process complies with the NBU Standard for Educational and Qualification Degree Completion.
Occupation and possible positions:
Graduates pursue careers as microbiologists carrying out qualitative and quantitative microbiological analysis of foods or conducting microbiological analyses of patient samples. They can pursue an academic career at universities or research institutes, work in antimicrobial drug distribution companies or laboratory equipment and consumables companies with a microbiological focus, as well as clinical drug research companies with a focus on new antibiotics.
