Cultural and Social Anthropology (in Bulgarian)

Short presentation of the programme:

The programme is research-oriented and offers specialised knowledge of the diversity of human societies and cultures. The students gain knowledge from different areas of anthropology (economic, political, symbolic) and develop skills for comparative study of cultures and societies in Europe, the Black Sea basin and the Balkans. The instruction in the programme comprises lecture courses in Anthropology of Europe and Eurasia, Construction of Cultural and National Identity, Cultural Heritage, Trans-Border Mobility and Globalisation Processes, Regionalisation, Methodology of Anthropological Research. The training courses include field anthropological observations and research projects. Master's theses are based on individual field research.

Practical training courses:

The programme comprises practices based on participation in field work and empirical research (incl. international) initiated by the Department of Anthropology, sociological agencies, NGOs and local administration.

International mobility:

The programme provides an opportunity for international student mobility at universities in Greece, France, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Switzerland and Romania.

Graduate Student Competencies:

MA graduates will have gained:

•knowledge of the culture and social structure of societies in Western and Central Europe, the Black Sea and the Balkans;

•skills for a comparative study of cultures;

•field work skills;

•skills for developing and implementing research and applied projects in the field of anthropology.

•knowledge and skills to study and preserve the Bulgarian cultural heritage

Graduation:

The MA studies are completed by defending a master’s dissertation after earning the required number of credits.

The graduation process complies with the NBU Standard for Educational and Qualification Degree Completion.

Occupation and possible positions:

The MA graduates have the opportunity to pursue careers in higher education institutions and scientific institutes, as experts in local and central administration, NGOs, businesses, public opinion research organisations and other institutions dealing with contemporary social, ethnic and demographic issues. They can specialise in a specific anthropological topic and continue their studies enrolling in a doctoral programme.
