Short presentation of the programme:

The programme trains qualified professionals in the survey and design of buildings and facilities, urban development, interior and architectural design. It provides the knowledge, practical skills and competences necessary for obtaining the professional qualification of architect and is in accordance with the uniform state requirements to acquire higher education in the specialty of architecture, the educational degree of master with a professional qualification of architect (State Gazette no. 7, January 2016). In the first and second years of instruction, in addition to the lecture and training courses, the programme comprises general education courses for knowledge and skills in the Bulgarian language, computers, sports and arts, foreign languages. The programme combines theoretical and applied lecture courses in the fields of Urban Planning, Territorial and Landscape Planning, Architecture of Buildings and Complexes and Architectural and Urban Heritage. The instruction comprises obligatory lecture courses on City Architecture; Residential, Public and Industrial Buildings and Complexes, Interiors and Design in architecture, contemporary materials and technologies in architecture, theory and history of Architecture, Urban Development and Fine Arts, Context and Reconstruction, Park Design and Landscaping, Engineering courses, Mathematics and Computer sciences, courses in humanities, social sciences, business and legal sciences and training sessions for each course. Elective lecture courses are also offered, incl. Management in Architecture and the Arts, City Sociology, Architectural Photography, Public Building Commissions and Architectural Competitions, Energy Efficiency and Architecture. The training courses include projects, individual assignments and practices on site and architecture visits. The course of study takes six years and includes obligatory practice, theoretical and practical state examinations: а clause and dissertation.

Practical training courses:

The programme provides opportunities for diverse placements in architectural and design structures. For students, there are opportunities to visit specialised companies and structures of the state administration to get familiar with the broad and interdisciplinary nature of their future jobs.

International mobility:

There are Erasmus+ student mobility contracts concluded.

Graduate Student Competencies:

Graduates will have mastered knowledge of:

• methods to research and prepare an architectural or structural project;

• history and theory of architecture and urban planning;

• regulatory framework of design and structural planning, landscape planning, development of structural schemes and plans and architectural object investment design;

• fine art and new technologies as a factor for the quality of the architectural project;

• design of engineering structures and systems related to the design of buildings and structural planning;

• construction materials and technologies, influencing the operation of buildings and facilities ensuring security, comfort of living, protection from climatic effects and energy efficiency;

• administrative procedures, competent authorities, rules for assigning, agreeing and approving the layout schemes and plans and the investment projects, construction permit, implementation and commissioning of constructions;

• designing environment accessible to people with disabilities.

Graduates will have mastered skills in:

• designing architectural projects in the field of urban and structural planning and designing urban spaces, structural scheming and planning, designing buildings, reconstructing buildings and designing interiors with aesthetic, functional and technical qualities;

• research and theoretical work in the field of theory and history of architecture;

• process management in the field of architectural and urban planning, ability to think creatively as architects and affirming their role in society.

Graduation:

Completion of studies takes place by passing a state exam comprising a clause and master’s dissertation defence.

Occupation and possible positions:

Graduated architects acquire design legal capacity under the terms and conditions of Chambers of Architects and Engineers in Investment Design Act. They pursue careers in architectural bureaus, state and private companies, state administration structures, scientific and educational institutes, freelancers in the following fields:

• studying and designing buildings, architectural facilities and interiors;

• urban, territorial and regional and landscape planning;

• planning historical structures and historical places;

• managing architectural and urban planning processes.
