Анотация:

This unit aims at acquainting students with linguistics, the science of language study. More precisely, it assists students in understanding the various aspects of linguistics and its relation to other disciplines and fields. Moreover, it helps students become aware of the nature of human language and its characteristics, components and acquisition. Specific topics include: first and second language acquisition; sounds of language; morphology, grammar and syntax; language and meaning; pragmatics, language variation; as well as language and the brain.

Компетенции:

1) On completion of the course the student will know:

• the main hypotheses about the origin of language;

• how language systems differ from other communication systems;

• how human language originated;

• the main levels of language description

• grammatical categories.

2) On completion of the course the student will be able to:

• use basic linguistic terminology;

• analyse language as a code communication system;

• define the relationship between thought and language;

• define the characteristics of language change.

  3. Phonetics and phonology. Production, transmission and perception of sounds. Their function within a language to encode meaning.
  4. Morphological classification of languages. Parts of speech. Word formation.
  5. Parts of the sentence. Grammatical relations, constituency, agreement.
  6. Comparative linguistics. History of languages. Classification of languages into families. Synchronic and diachronic developments.
  7. Linguistic schools of thought. Von Humboldt’s ideas. Sapir-Wharf hypothesis.
  8. Structuralism: de Saussure, the sign character of language, structure, system, sign. The Prague school: function, nucleus, periphery, theme/rheme. Dutch structuralism. American structuralism.
  9. Chomsky. Computer linguistics, corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics, deep and surface structure, competence, performance.
  10. Semantics: Sinn und Bedeutung, semantic fields, componential analysis
  11. Psycholinguistics. Language processing. Language Acquisition.
  12. Sociolinguistics. Cultural norms and expectations. Sociolect, idiolect, jargon.
  13. Text Linguistics. Speech act theory. Linguistic pragmatics.
