History of the State and Law (in Bulgarian)

Short presentation of the programme:

The doctoral programme in History of the State and Law has a theoretical, research and teaching orientation in the field of history of the state and law at doctoral level, providing the opportunity for specialised training in a variety of problems and concepts from the theory, methodology and practice, taking into account the achievements and challenges facing modern legal and historical research in the field. A special emphasis is put on acquainting the PhD students with a wide range of areas, modern methods and techniques for teaching the history of the state and law, as well as with scientific tools for interdisciplinary research of current problems.

Graduate Student Competencies:

PhD graduates will have mastered the modern trends in the study of the state and law in the context of Bulgarian and European history and politics, its new scientific development, and will have acquired profound knowledge in the specific field of their dissertations. They will have gained sufficient knowledge and experience to successfully collect and summarise scientific information, as well as to clearly define current problems, know the latest research and participate in contemporary debates in the field of History of the State and Law; will have acquired in-depth professional knowledge and methodological training which will ensure the success of their scientific research and successful defence of their dissertations.

The following competences are aimed at:

• expanding the knowledge of the History of the State and Law, getting acquainted with the scientific achievements within Bulgarian scientific and research organisations and the foreign ones;

• learning the methods of scientific research applicable in the History of the State and Law, while at the same time conducting an independent scientific study of historical sources and critically considering the existing scientific hypotheses and practical approaches;

• preparing a dissertation that contains scientific results and contributions to the study of various topics of the History of the State and Law.

The need for a critical understanding of historical sources and scientific research of legislation in different historical periods are focal points in the training of the PhD students in the History of the State and Law Doctoral Programme.

Graduation:

Upon earning the required number of credits and defending a doctoral dissertation.

Occupation and possible positions:

PhD graduates are granted the opportunity to conduct both independent research and participate in group projects, gain teaching experience, acquire skills in researching the history of the state and law, as well as an extensive legal culture applicable in various areas of law. The teacher training has a multifaceted effect, i.e. on the one hand, it meets the needs of the academic community for new teachers, while on the other, it meets the public demand for qualified lawyers.
