Short presentation of the programme:

The doctoral programme in Anthropology is research-oriented and provides specialised training to conduct field research as well as analytical, theoretical and applied work in the field of sociocultural anthropology and social sciences. The training incorporates the latest achievements in human sciences: concepts, ideas, methods and practices.

Major and professional qualification:

Scientific direction: Tourism

Graduate Student Competencies:

PhD graduates will have mastered:

• awareness of scientific sources of the issues in their speciality and ability to provide an objective assessment and expertise on the processes in modern organisations, both theoretically and empirically;

• ability to analyse and interpret theoretical concepts and models which lead to building a system of knowledge and skills to study processes in tourism;

• ability to determine approaches, methods and tools to conduct theoretical and empirical research in tourist enterprises, taking into account the specifics of the modern business space;

• ability to define the necessary information and analytical tools to conduct theoretical and empirical research in tourism;

• ability to formulate and defend theoretically-grounded ideas suitable for effective management of a tourism business;

• ability to test the research results obtained in a real-life tourism business environment;

• strategic and global thinking abilities typical of scientists, researchers and managers.

Graduation:

Upon earning the required number of credits and defending a doctoral dissertation.

Occupation and possible positions:

PhD graduates in Tourism can work as lecturers and researchers at NBU as well as in the system of secondary and higher education in the Republic of Bulgaria. Among the main positions in Tourism, they can work as managers in tourist enterprises and companies (tour operators, travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, animation, etc.). In recent years, many have been employed as project management experts and managers. A number of the graduates work as experts in state, governmental and non-governmental structures in tourism and in industry organisations. In view of the implementation of EU projects in tourism, there is a growing need for professionals in cultural tourism, cultural heritage, special events in tourism, information technology and digital marketing in tourism, tourist animation in various structures at national and regional level.
