Short presentation of the programme:

The programme provides PhD students with the opportunity to conduct scientific research and gain teaching qualifications in semiotic theory and its various interdisciplinary strands in the humanities and social studies. It is particularly suitable for candidates ambitious to pursue an academic career since it incorporates a wide variety of topics with the rigorous methodological standards of research work. The course of study presupposes active commitment on the part of the lecturers and PhD students. The programme is international by nature.

PhD students in Semiotics are involved in organising the annual international Early Autumn Schools of Semiotics, they participate in it and gain experience in all possible activities of modern academic life.

International mobility:

PhD students in Semiotics are granted the opportunity to up to six-month exchanges under the Erasmus+ Programme at universities in Italy (Bologna, Turin, Bari, Modena), Finland (Helsinki), Estonia (Tartu), Germany, Greece (Thessaloniki, Florina) and Spain (Tenerife, Valladolid).

Graduate Student Competencies:

PhD graduates will have acquired a wide range of teaching and research skills to:

• expertly handle scientific literature and summarise a large amount of information in a systematic and teachable form;

• handle semiotic theory fluently and apply it for a better understanding of complex communicative phenomena such as mass communications, visual and performing arts, narrative, social processes, as well as to verbal communication, identity and interpersonal relations;

• conduct theoretical research and carry out field studies to be published in scientific publications, teaching aids and articles in periodicals;

• carry out consulting activities as experts in modern communicative culture.

Graduation:

Upon earning the required number of credits and defending a doctoral dissertation.

Occupation and possible positions:

PhD graduates in Semiotics can pursue academic careers in the humanities and social sciences, arts theory, culture and communications. Apart from universities, they in demand in the NGO sector involved in culture and intercultural exchange, PR agencies and political and commercial marketing, requiring a high level of communicative competence.
