Short presentation of the programme:

The programme is research oriented in the field of sociology, providing specialised training on a variety of problems, concepts and authors from the theory, methodology and practice of sociology, incorporating the achievements and challenges contemporary sociology and other related humanities and social sciences are faced with. It provides an opportunity to carry out both independent research and participate in joint projects, gain teaching experience, master skills in writing and reviewing scientific articles and monographs, draw up papers and presentations and deliver them at professional scientific conferences. A special emphasis is put on acquainting the PhD students with a wide range of modern trends, methods and techniques in sociology as scientific tools for sociological research of the current social problems faced by the world and the Bulgarian society in the age of globalization.

Practical training courses:

Practical training includes research in the NBU Sociology Laboratory, internships in sociological and marketing agencies, and internships in regional and municipal administrations, NGOs, and mass media.

International mobility:

The programme provides opportunities for international student mobility at universities in Germany, France and Great Britain.

Graduate Student Competencies:

PhD graduates will have acquired in-depth knowledge and practical skills of the latest advances in the field of contemporary sociology; methodological competences and specialised training in the field of historical sociology, sociology of social change, globalisation processes and the global risk society; skills in writing, editing and reviewing scientific articles; skills to independently formulate and solve a scientific problem and to carry out the activities necessary for professionally conducted scientific research; teaching skills and systematic practice using modern methods, techniques and tools for academic teaching; skills to carry out scientific guidance, consultation and expertise in the field of sociology.

Graduation:

Graduation takes place upon earning a total of 180 credits, incl. the credits earned by successfully defending a dissertation.

Occupation and possible positions:

PhD graduates pursue careers as sociologists researchers, university professors, experts and consultants in the field of science, education and the media, highly qualified specialists in the field of business, state and municipal administration, political organisations and the NGO sphere.
