Civil and Family Law (in Bulgarian)
Short presentation of the programme:
The doctoral programme in Civil and Family Law can be defined as the most comprehensive since it covers several significant and large areas of legal science that occupy a central place within the framework of private law. It includes fundamental sections such as the general part of civil law, property law, bond law, family law and inheritance law. The PhD students in commercial law are also trained in this scientific specialty. The Department of Law carries out a variety of research activities linked to organising and holding seminars and conferences, developing and participating in research projects and publishing the conducted research. The department publishes the Law Review magazine and the electronic Law Journal of NBU of scientific publications of the faculty, doctoral students and students.

The Department of Law of New Bulgarian University has established partnerships with:
• The University of Cologne (Germany) as part of the pan-European Erasmus/Socrates Programme. Among the main goals of the cooperation between the two higher education institutions are the academic exchange of students and faculty and the development of common scientific and educational projects in the field of law;
• The Zinovia and Konstantin Katsarovi Foundation, University of Geneva, Switzerland, provides scholarships for studies, specialisations and research for undergraduate and PhD students and faculty.
Graduate Student Competencies:
PhD graduates will have acquired:
• highly specialised professional knowledge in the field of civil law sciences;
• skills to independently formulate a research problem, find relevant scientific literature, prepare a bibliographic reference on a given problem, work with legal literature and extract the necessary information from sources;
• skills for presenting different hypotheses and opinions and their critical analysis, drawing up a thesis and its defence, building new hypotheses and proposing relevant solutions;
• skills to write a scientific text and publish scientific papers and other academic works;
• teaching skills and knowledge of modern teaching methods and tools.
Graduation:
Upon earning the required number of credits and defending a doctoral dissertation.
