Short presentation of the programme:

The programme prepares highly qualified scientific specialists able to conduct both fundamental and applied scientific research in various fields of psychology and related sciences. The course of study envisages doctoral students’ enrolment in doctoral courses at NBU, participation in national and international scientific conferences, symposia, seminars, specialisations, etc., organised by the Department of Cognitive Science and Psychology at NBU, the Cognitive Science Research Centre and other institutions which carry out the educational process, scientific research and practical activities in the field of psychology.

Practical training courses:

The programme provides PhD students with the opportunity for practices and internships in the laboratories of the Department of Cognitive Science and Psychology, i.e. the Laboratory of Experimental Psychology, Laboratory of Neurosciences, Laboratory of Usability Research, Laboratory of Cognitive Development, Laboratory of Cognitive Robotics and Artificial Cognitive Systems, as well as in the laboratories of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

International mobility:

PhD students are granted the opportunity to participate in international academic exchange under agreements with universities in Berlin, Bochum, Osnabrück, Lyon, Paris, Seville, Trento, etc.

Graduate Student Competencies:

PhD graduates will have mastered competencies to:

• perform analytical and research activities in the field of general psychology by conducting independent research;

• plan scientific research based on the latest achievements in the scientific field;

• implement research activities, process data and evaluate the results obtained based on the requirements of the science of psychology;

• conduct scientific exchange; know the leading research centres in the relevant field;

• write papers to get published in international scientific journals;

• teach effectively.

Graduation:

Upon earning the required number of credits and defending a doctoral dissertation.

Occupation and possible positions:

PhD graduates will be able to:

• work in research units dealing with fundamental and applied psychological research;

• pursue careers in teaching and consulting in the field of psychology and related disciplines related to mental health and interpersonal relations;

• master additional competencies to work in the various applied branches of psychology under the scientist-practitioner model.
