Russian Studies (with English as a second foreign language) (in Russian and English)

Short presentation of the programme:

The programme provides extensive instruction in the field of language, literature, theory and practice of translation, methodology of teaching Russian, as well as the history and culture of Russia and the Russian-speaking world. The language training takes place over the four years and combines theoretical and applied aspects. Throughout their studies, the students are trained in two foreign languages, i.e. Russian, reaching C 2 level, and English reaching C2 level as well. The programme offers foundational courses both in the field of philology as well as interdisciplinary courses related to philology. The students master their knowledge of the Russian language, literature, history and culture of the Russian-speaking world, theory and practice of translation and foreign language teaching. In the third and fourth years, the program me offers two specialisations, translator and teacher, as well as the opportunity to enroll in a minor programme which is free of charge upon meeting certain requirements.

Practical training courses:

Practical training includes internships in translation agencies, television stations, travel agencies, schools and foreign language schools.

International mobility:

The programme provides an opportunity for international student mobility at universities in n Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Spain and France.

Graduate Student Competencies:

Graduates will have mastered knowledge in the field of theoretical and applied linguistics, literature, culture and history of Russia and the Russian-speaking countries, theory and practice of translation, methodology of Russian language teaching.

• skills to perform translation and interpretation from and into Russian; teach Russian in all grades of the Bulgarian school;

• listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written and oral English language skills at level B2 according to the Common Language Framework of the Council of Europe.

Graduation:

Upon earning the required number of credits and passing state exams.

Specialisation: Translation

Completion of studies in the bachelor's degree programme takes place by passing state exams upon earning the required number of credits.

State exams: total number of credits: 10 ECT

• Written state exam in Russian: 3 ECT (for both specialisations)

• Oral state exam in Russian: 3 ECT (for both specialisations)

• Specialisation: Translation: a state exam in translation (Russian language): 2 ECT; a state exam in interpreting (Russian language) – 2 ECT.

• Specialisation: Russian language teacher: a state practical-applied exam in Russian language teaching – 4 ECT

Occupation and possible positions:

Graduates pursue careers as translators; teachers of Russian language, literature, history and culture of Russia and the Russian-speaking world at all levels of the Bulgarian school; in foreign language schools, state administration, international organisations and institutions, Bulgarian and foreign companies, travel agencies, in the field of tour guiding and hospitality, publishing and book distribution, print and electronic media, editing and proofreading, etc.
