German Studies (with English as a Second Language) (in German, English and Bulgarian)

Short presentation of the programme:

The programme provides a comprehensive training in the German language, literature, theory and practice of translation, methodology of teaching German, history and culture of German-speaking countries. The language training takes place over four years, combining theoretical and applied learning. During their studies, the students receive in-depth training in two foreign languages, i.e. in German (C2 level), the first foreign language, and in English (B2 level), the second foreign language. The training consists of both foundation courses in the field of philology and interdisciplinary courses related to the professional field of philology. The students acquire profound knowledge of the German language, literature, history and culture of the German-speaking world, theory and practice of translation and foreign language teaching. In the third and fourth years, the programme offers specialisations in Translation and Teaching German, as well as the opportunity to enrol in a minor programme which is free of charge upon meeting certain requirements. The students of the programme are offered special course preferences at the Goethe-Institut. There are special German teacher training courses taught within the programme in compliance with the Goethe-Institut's Teaching German Module.

Practical training courses:

Practical training includes internships in translation agencies, television stations, travel agencies, schools and foreign language schools.

International mobility:

The programme provides an opportunity for international student mobility at universities in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Slovenia, Slovakia, Serbia, Turkey, as well as under the CEEPUS programme.

Graduate Student Competencies:

• knowledge in the field of theoretical and applied linguistics, literature, culture and history of German-speaking countries, theory and practice of translation, methodology of teaching German;

• skills in translating and interpreting from and into German; teaching German in all grades of the Bulgarian school;

• listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written and oral English language skills at level B2 according to the CEFR of the Council of Europe.

Graduation:

Upon earning the required number of credits and passing state exams.

State exams: total number of credits: 10 ECTS

• Written state exam in German: 3 ECTS (for both specialisations);

• Oral state exam in German: 3 ECTS (for both specialisations);

• Specialisation: Translation: state exam in written translation (German language): 2 ECTS; state exam in interpreting (German language): 2 ECTS;

• Specialisation: German language teacher: state qualification exam in German language teaching: 4 ECTS

Occupation and possible positions:

Graduates pursue careers as translators, teachers of German language, literature, history and culture of German-speaking countries in all grades of Bulgarian schools; in foreign language schools, state administration, international organisations and institutions, Bulgarian and foreign companies, travel agencies; in the field of tour guiding and hospitality, publishing and book distribution, print and electronic media, editing and proofreading, etc.
