Ecology and Environmental Protection (in Bulgarian)
Short presentation of the programme:
The programme provides instruction in topical issues such as the study of natural resources, the problems associated with their use, pollution and depletion, and the possibilities for minimising and eliminating negative impacts on the environment. The programme is structured hierarchically, with students acquiring fundamental knowledge and skills in the first two years, which are developed in the third and fourth years of study through specialised courses, practical courses and internships. Due to the requirements set in the field of environmental protection in the EU which affect more and more economic sectors, there is an increased need for environmental protection specialists in the state and local government, public and private enterprises in the industrial, construction and scientific sectors, NGOs, etc. In the first two years, the instruction focuses on general education courses, two-semester courses in the main areas of study, such as Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, courses such as Crystallography and Mineralogy, Introduction to Geology, Environmental Protection, Natural Resources, Environmental Disasters, etc. In the third and fourth years, the instruction comprises specialised lecture courses.

Practical training courses:
Practical training includes field work and internships in the laboratories of the department and external institutions such as ministries, state agencies, municipal administrations, enterprises, etc.

Graduate Student Competencies:
Graduates will have mastered knowledge in the field of environmental protection, i.e. pollution and protection of air, water, soil, biodiversity, waste treatment, etc.; skills to write environmental reports and take environmental protection preventive measures.
Graduation:
Completion of studies in the bachelor's programme takes place by defending a bachelor's thesis or passing a state exam upon earning the required number of credits. In addition to the professional qualification provided, students can also obtain additional specialisation by enrolling in a minor programme.
The graduation process complies with the NBU Standard for Educational and Qualification Degree Completion.
Occupation and possible positions:
Graduates pursue careers as environmental protection experts in state and municipal administrations and structures, managers and consultants in environmental departments and organisations, researchers in scientific institutes.
