Cell Biology and Virology (in Bulgarian)

Short presentation of the programme:

The programme comprises the two complementary fields of cell biology and virology, covering a wide range of interactions between cellular structures and intracellular pathogens (viruses, viroids, mycoplasmas, rickettsiae, chlamydiae). The Instruction takes place in the specialised laboratories of cell biology and virology, microbiology and biochemistry at NBU and also at other scientific and medical units to provide an extensive study of eukaryotic and prokaryotic pathogens, host cells and tumour cells. The students get familiar with biological processes and phenomena at the organismal, tissue, cellular, subcellular and molecular levels using modern physicochemical, biochemical, biophysical, genetic, microbiological, virological and physiological methods, thus mastering their up-to-date interdisciplinary molecular biology knowledge. They focus on cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular genetics, microbiology, virology, molecular virology, molecular immunology, biophysics, plant physiology, animal and human physiology, necessary and crucial for solving current problems such as the control and treatment of dangerous viral infections and cancers.

Major and professional qualification:

Major: Cell Biology and Virology
Qualification: molecular biologist-virologist

Practical training courses:

Practical training takes place in the Biology Research Unit, the Laboratory of Zoology and Botany, the Laboratory of Anatomy and Histology, the NBU Unit in the town of Sozopol, and in units related to the studied disciplines.

International mobility:

The programme provides an opportunity for international student mobility at universities in

Graduate Student Competencies:

Students master the ability to combine and integrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in cell biology and virology, enabling them to discuss, analyse, evaluate and carry out successful research and clinical work. The competences gained in cell biology and virology provide them with the opportunity to demonstrate innovative thinking in various directions that use modern biochemical and molecular biological approaches (proteomics, genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, genetic engineering), medicine (molecular diagnostics), and pharmacology (drug design).

Graduation:

Completion of studies in the bachelor's programme takes place by defending a bachelor's thesis or passing a state exam upon earning the required number of credits. In addition to the professional qualification provided, students can also obtain additional specialisation by enrolling in a minor programme.

The graduation process complies with the NBU Standard for Educational and Qualification Degree Completion.
