Анотация:
This course aims to introduce students to practical skills necessary for conference interpreting in the simultaneous mode with equipment. Prepare them for topics commonly used in international conference settings. Students will acquire techniques of simultaneous interpreting, such as dual tasking, condensation, anticipation etc. Practice will include analytical and research skills, reformulation and public speaking skills, short-term memory skills and other. Students will interpret into their A Language (mother tongue).
The aim of the course is to help students
• understand working environment
• acquire basic skills used in conference interpreting
• practise simultaneous interpreting with authentic speeches and presentations
• understand and assess own performance

At the end of the course students will
• Become familiar with the main theoretical and practical issues underlying simultaneous interpreting
• be able to use introductory skills of simultaneous interpreting to real-life interpreting situations.
• become familiar with various aspects of international meetings relevant to interpreters;
• be able to apply conference interpreters’ ethics and professional conduct accordingly in various settings.

- Introduction to Course and Syllabus. Introduction and background. What is conference interpreting? Simultaneous interpreting with and without equipment.
- Conference interpreting settings. Types and genres of speech (monological and dialogical). Necessary requirements. Gile’s effort model formula. 10 Golden rules for SI interpreters. Reformulation.
- Introductory exercises. Introduction to international meetings/conferences. Conference setting: Structure, participants, procedures. Conference language. Agenda and welcome speech.
- Skills development - Volume and microphone protocol Skills development - When to start speaking in SI Skills development - Listening to Oneself Skills development - Split Attention Exercises: Shadowing, interpreting lists (eg, countries, figures), analysis of content, focus on expressive/cliched language. Practice of speeches and other forms of presentations relevant to conference interpreting. Short announcements (arrangements, accommodation, tourist activities)
- Further speeches. Dialogue/debate in conference context.
