COURSE ANNOTATION AND AIMS:
The course will offer a thorough and systematic introduction to the theories of the modern state. It will present
all major theories dealing with the functioning of the modern state and review major criticisms to which they
are subjected. Students will familiarize themselves with state development, their structures, functions and
modes of operation. The course will examine various current challenges to the modern state emerging from
globalization and its impact, Students will apply the key ideas of each theory in a 'real life' situation by means of
a simulated game of national budget approval. Each two-hour session will be divided in two parts: one
presenting the 10 core ideas of each modern state theory and the other applying them by means of making
political and policy choices if that theory were true. For instance, deciding on tax policy by means of applying
the elite theory, etc.
