SHEM008 Търговско и инвестиционно банкиране

The banking industry has experienced marked changes in recent years as deregulation has allowed banks to diversify into the broad financial services area. In addition, various trends such as industry consolidation, securitisation, and disintermediation are all significantly affected, resulting in a smaller number of major players operating in credit, capital, and money market businesses that increasingly overlap. Furthermore, the traditional focus on banking as a mainly domestic business is changing, and banks are also pursuing international strategies. This rapidly evolving environment poses threats and opportunities to bank managers who must be increasingly aware of both domestic and international developments in the management process and, in particular, the various risk-return trade-offs in all areas of a bank’s activities. This unit focuses on the functions and management of commercial and investment banks, their role in the economy, and the forces that continue to change them worldwide. It examines consumer and commercial credit analysis, asset and liability management, liquidity management, risk management, loan policy management, and capital adequacy and regulation. Furthermore, topics covered include investment banking activities, such as raising capital, advising on mergers and acquisitions, brokerage/dealership activities, asset management, and proprietary trading and investment. Finally, the main factors that might have contributed to the recent financial crisis, along with potential remedial measures, are assessed throughout the unit.

This unit aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the principal activities in which the major commercial and investment banks are involved. It also aims to expose students to contemporary problems and issues in the field and develop the skills, techniques, and practical competences needed for advanced-level financial management in banking.
