Анотация:
This course provides an intensive practical introduction to the three types of interpreting that are widely used in the business world, the media and the community (particularly in healthcare and legal environments) - Oral Sight translation of a written text, Consecutive reproduction of a statement or speech in the other language once the original speaker has finished, and Dialogue (or Liaison) interpreting involving two-way mediation of a discussion between speakers who do not know each other’s languages.
The aim of the course is
• to familiarize students with the fundamentals of the profession of conference interpreter (both theory and practice)
• to equip them with some basic interpreting skills between Bulgarian, Russian and English such as oral/aural skills, memory, language transfer skills, and terminology research in preparation for bilingual interpreting.
As well as examining the role of an interpreter in both the private sector and in the European Union, the course will consist of practical interpreting exercises and workshops in class to give greater confidence when interpreting in public.
Weekly 2-hour classes practice a range of skills using progressively more complex themed materials in both live and recorded form. Topics will be varied and selected to be of relevance to all students.
The module also includes 4 lectures introducing the main theoretical and practical issues underlying interpreting (difference from written translation, contexts of use, factors affecting performance, role of the interpreter as socio-cultural mediator, ethics of public service interpreting).

Upon successful completion of the course the students will:
• become familiar with the main theoretical and practical issues underlying interpreting
• understand the nature of the work of interpreters and requirements to perform it successfully
• acquire basic skills and techniques in liason interpreting and consecutive interpreting without notes
