MHRE316D Business ethics and corporate social responsibility


This course introduces students to the relevance and importance of ethics and social responsibility in business. Important learning objectives are to increase students’ awareness and understanding of ethical issues in business, and to provide students with useful conceptual tools to guide analysis and decisions. The ultimate intent of the course is to leave students better equipped to identify, think critically about, and resolve ethical issues that are encountered in one’s working life at the individual, organizational, and societal levels.

fter completing successfully this course the students will:

1) know:

• why business ethics is necessary in today society and economy;

• understand the nature of business ethics in the global business environment;

• the main business ethics theories;

• the ethical implications of business practices from a stakeholder perspective;

• the challenges of business social responsibility;

• the international CSR strandards.

2) are capable of:

• developing critical thinking skills via the application of concepts and theories to business cases;

• assessing when a particular problem within organizations arises in order to see its ethical aspects;

• see the possible decisions of ethical problems from differnt piont of view;

• evaluating corporate social responsibity initiatives and progammes;

• making difference between external and internal aspects of corporate social responsibilty.

Students should have the following knowledge and/or skills:

Courses on general human resource management, understanding of HRM strategies, policies and practices.

  2. 2 Business ethics and the law. Levels of business ethics. Business ethics and corporate social responsibility.
  3. 3 Business ethics, the changing environment, and stakeholder management. Business ethics and human resource management
  4. 4 Business ethics theory. Judging business ethics issues. Ethical principles and decision making. Managerial ethics and CSR
  5. 5 Ethical decision-making: eight perspectives on workplace dilemmas.
  6. 6 The business ethics program, standards and communication. Putting business ethics into practice
  7. 7 Discussion on the first chapter of the book „Corporate social responsibility“ written by Philip Kotler and Nancy Lee: „Doing the most good for your company and your cause“.
  8. 8 Defining CSR; Principles of CSR; Stakeholders and the social contract.
  9. 9 Stakeholder’s theory; Sustainable development: introduction and definitions.
  10. 10 Globalization and CSR.
  11. 11 Developing successful CSR strategy and policy.
  12. 12 Internal CSR activities – how to design and implement them in the organizations.
  13. 13 Evaluating CSR practices and initiatives;
  14. 14 CSR international standards.
  15. 15 Summary of course activities. Students’ presentations on the assignments for current evaluation. Discussions on the presentations.
