Анотация:

Elections are the central and defining feature of democracy. Electoral systems are a crucial link between the preferences of citizens and the governments; they are also powerful instruments that support power-sharing arrangements and building cabinets in democracies. The course will introduce the main terminology in the electoral process. The students will be guided through the so-called electoral cycle and will receive the needed knowledge to analyse the political consequences of different types of electoral systems. They will be introduced to various election cases of specific election frauds, usage of IT or historic peculiarities.

Компетенции:

After completing successfully this course the students will:

1) know:

• the differences between electoral systems and their basic political consequences

2) are capable of

• Using electoral results to obtain key measures of analysis

• Comparing the electoral systems used by different countries, and evaluate how observed systems shaped the politics of those countries

• Recognizing the possibilities and limitations of electoral system design and reform.

• Making basic assessment about the fairness of the election process.

• Curiosity to and general knowledge of the current political and social issues

• General knowledge of world’s history

• MS Excel basic skills
