• The course aims to give a thorough knowledge of the general and the specific development of Byzantine and Orthodox countries in the Middle Ages

• Utilization of key elements of the state, institutional, religious and cultural model of Byzantium from Southeast Europe.

• Continuity of government institutions and state hierarchy.

• The inclusion of the Balkan countries in the Pax Christiana and perception of the Byzantine state model.

• The creation of a new cultural "communities" within the "Byzantine community."

• Analyze problems, genesis and development of Southeast Europe and their place in European civilization during the Middle Ages, and the influence of Byzantine and political models, political ideology, institutions.

• To form opinions about factors of construction of the medieval world, the continuity of state institutions.

• To know historiography on the subject.

• To distinguish the basic concepts and those of the individual authors and historiographical schools.
