Анотация:
COURSE ANNOTATION AND AIMS:
The course in political communications is to provide information and to help building knowledge and skills on basic concepts and notions that characterize political communication. It will examine the main characteristics of political communication, depending on the subject of communication (political party, issue, individual), and depending on the position of the political entity in the axis opposition - power.
The course will present basic concepts of political communication during elections and after the election period. Major emphasis will be placed on the channels of political communication with a focus on media relations. Main techniques used by political and social actors in traditional media and in online political communication will be presented as well. In a special section will be considered the evolution of political communication in the digital age and so called e-democracy. In practical cases will be highlighted key distinguishing characteristics of political communication in the U.S., Western and Central and Eastern Europe.
During the course will be presented case studies of parliamentary, local and presidential campaigns in Bulgaria as well as election campaigns abroad.
Both individual and teamwork tasks will be assigned.
The evaluation marks of the course will be formed based on the student's auditorium classes and seminars performance, the quality of execution of tasks during training and individual performance on the final exam.
The final exam will include the development of one of the following assignments:
• Build a profile of presidential candidate / MP / Mayor, formulating messages, target groups, basic strategy and tactics;
• Strategy for public education campaign to vote / campaign against vote buying;
• Organization and management of political communication of a political party in opposition / power (teamwork task);
• Organization and preparation of a television contest of candidates for President / MPs / mayors (teamwork task).
