DIHB004 Проект "Визуалните среди като инструмент за обучение" (Visual Environments as a Participative Tool of Learning)


The objective of the project is to create a framework generating animated scenes where an interactive moving around is possible. Interactive navigation here means that the user can move freely from one point of view to another into a scene. The created visualizations will serve as components of a website navigating in Ancient cultural environment as an educational tool to obtain inside knowledge touching the Map or the Timeline. The issue of the project is to create a possibly simple solution of rendering visualization with the active usage of client’s GPU. The scenes should ensure a fast download and subsequent visualization via client’s GPU thus implying an executable file already downloaded on the client’s PC.

The scene usually includes three-four human figures and simple static objects such as a cave, temple or open air ambiance. The project intent is to comply with non-commercial open source rules and regulations.

A short description of a scenario involving three human figures will be provided on a separate file on the first meeting of the project.

The project will provide necessary skills to handle web based instruments to communicate in simple and elegant ways (such as Unity 3D).

- level of technological competency required: 3D geometric modelling, application of textures, programming of human movements in compliance with physical reality

- complexity of the project: medium (interface assessment and application, data operation)

- special skills required by group members: knowledge of analytic geometry and 3D geometric modelling as well as for 3D web visualization

The following report provides an analysis and evaluation of the project put forward by Ludmil Duridanov and Stanislav Ivanov from the New Bulgarian University in Sofia in order to provide a detailed project plan outlining a solution to the requirement of an interactive 3D animation of scenarios with human protagonists.

Currently there are very few if any websites providing 3D interaction of environments. When completed this project will create a medium for new audiences to be educated in history.

The project will be web based meaning download sizes and graphical demand from the users computer will be kept to a minimum while still providing a balance between user experience and resource demand. Because the project is web based and the technological capability of some audiences is low, high-resolution textures will not be used, files that require download will be of a reduced size and movement within the environment will be simplistic.

Interaction will be a corner stone of the project meaning the user will immerse themselves in the program through life like interaction with characters, scenes and objects within the environment. This will include talking to characters, having the ability to observe through different angles and being able to pause, fast-forward and rewind the scene.

The backbone of this project will be Unity 3D, which is modelling software, designed specifically for making interactive environments. The solution put forward by KS1401 will create an example of 3D interactive possibilities demonstrating an open-air ambiance and a cave with interactive character models complete with audio, complete user control and animation.
